Assistens Cemetery was the most solemn stop on this Copenhagen trip. It's the resting place of two of Denmark's greatest cultural giants — the writer Hans Christian Andersen and the existentialist philosopher Søren Kierkegaard.
The cemetery carries a deep 19th-century literary and philosophical weight that makes you feel a quiet reverence.
But it's not a gloomy place at all — rather, it's a beloved spot for locals to stroll, blooming with flowers and feeling more like a forest park.
When I arrived early in the morning, two young people were already laying flowers at Andersen's grave. At Kierkegaard's grave, two elderly visitors who had traveled a long way stood quietly paying their respects.
The air in the cemetery was so fresh and pleasant that I found myself wanting to linger and walk a little longer.
